Horseback Riding In Whistler!

We love Vancouver, but right up there with this fine city…. we love Canadian Wilderness Adventures. The Whistler based company runs a wide variety of adventures, and we've been able to try out many of them, including their ATV, Snowmobile, and Snowshoe tours. This summer they've expanded into the equestrian world by offering Horseback tours, and asked if we wanted to saddle up. Of course we said yes.

The day started by checking into the Canadian Wilderness Adventure office in Whistler Village and signing safety waivers. A quick drive to the Callaghan Valley and we were dropped off at the outpost, home of the summer horseback and winter dog sled tours. City wear was swapped for boots and a cowboy hat and we were off to meet our trusty steeds.

We were introduced to our travel buddies, Bones, Duke, and Martha Stewart (a kind rescue horse that has a far better life now), all of which were gentle and easy for beginners to feel comfortable around. A few quick lessons on how to hold the reins and what to do if a bear is spotted (unnecessary on our tour, thank goodness!) and we headed off into the woods.

The Callaghan Valley is one of the most beautiful places in BC, and experiencing the old growth forests on horseback is one of the most tranquil experiences to be had. Our guide Larry was great in giving some history of the area and pointing out fun facts about particular trees areas that we would pass through. And, upon request, he also sang us a cowboy tune.

The tour took us to a look out point with an incredible view of Alexander Falls where we stopped to take in the picturesque location before saddling up and heading back down the trails.

The tour was a great escape from the busyness of life and provided a pause to soak up the beauty and stillness of the wild. A great experience for people that have never been on a horse as the trails are easy and the animals are calm and gentle. The hardest part was keeping them from snacking on branches along the way!
